'Gate Bow Out of Kent FA Plate

Margate FC Women bow out of the Kent FA plate in the quarter final stage as Cray Wanderers took their early lead to the final whistle.

The Blues headed into the cup fixture this weekend having suffered 4 consecutive defeats across all competitions, hoping to put an end to their recent fortune, and pave their way into a second semi-final.

It was Cray who started on the front foot, as a well placed corner was knocked into the goal after the 'keeper was unable claim the ball. But this didn't dampen the Blues' spirits, as several shots were blasted towards goal, hitting the crossbar and being cleared from the line, but a panicked defence on a number of occasions.

Shortly before half time, Cray doubled their lead as a quick counter beat the defensive line. Goalkeeper Nicole Adams, stepped out to challenge, but a slight mistiming allowed a quick-thinking Cray player to knock the ball around and tap it in the back of the empty net.

It was the 'Gate who came out for the second half on fire, as a very quick press almost led to a critical goal in the first minute of the half. With the wind on their side, the team looked set on levelling the scores. Another shot hit the woodwork from a tight angle giving yet another hope of a Margate goal.

Despite a dominant performance the Blues were unable to find the back of the net, with Cray's defence somehow able to block any shots fired their way.

Manager Steph Meek had her say:

"It's never nice to be knocked from a cup, especially in the latter stages however I have not walked away from this fixture disappointed in the slightest.

"The team are being asked to deliver on new formations and tactics without having been drilled in them. Although this suits the team's playing style they're adapting purely on words and diagrams. Training this week with give them opportunity to develop and visualise these tactics.

"The performance was dominant and when both the opposition and referee give credit and praise to the squad, explaining that they're not sure how they didn't win, it shows that the side worked hard to deliver and ultimately the circumstances didn't play in our favour.

"I'm looking forward to this week's coming fixture as there are so many positives to build on. It will be nice to get back on home soil with a bit of support behind the team. A win will see some rewards for their hard work and efforts, booking a place in the final."
