Margate Complete Astonishing Comeback

By Josh Cole

The ‘Gate performed an astonishing late comeback to go from 2-0 down and win 3-2 away at Coles Park, to keep the survival hopes well and truly alive!

The hosts took the lead midway through the first half in the 28th minute through Lateef Adaja, after a quick counter caught Margate out.

The scoreline became two in the second half, as a free kick was lofted into the box and Bar won the header, which allowed Bello to run into the box, unmarked, and finish past Harry Seaden.

After weathering the storm in the second half, the ‘Gate had a resurgence of life after silky feet from Pinder inside the box saw him get fouled and Margate would have a penalty!

Steve Cawley stepped up and calmly struck the ball into the bottom left corner in the 77th minute.

In the 82nd minute, we were level. A long ball found Cawley, who produced the touch of the season to bring the ball down and he played it towards an open Oladipo. Destiny then calmly took it past one defender and put the ball into the corner!

The 89th minute came around. Another long ball over the top, this time, looking for Oladipo, who appeared to be offside but he ducked under the ball which allowed Greenhalgh to get through, and lob the ‘keeper, to complete an almighty comeback!

The first half saw Margate dominate the ball, but Potters Bar look for counters.

A rare moment for Potters Bar in the Margate half ended in a goal. In the 28th minute, a counterattack would be the ‘Gate’s undoing, for which was a bright first half as Adaja found himself in loads of space in the box to sweep the ball home.

Potters Bar grew into the game and in the last ten minutes of the first half had three dangerous opportunities which required excellent defending. Hudson first in the 35th minute preventing another dangerous attack on the break. Hudson was called into action shortly after as he threw himself in front of a shot from Keto at the back post.

In a rare mishap from Perkins, Seaden spared the defenders blushes by palming the ball away, only for it to fall to another Bar player, but by that point, Perkins had recovered to the line and headed the ball off to prevent going two down.

The second half was a continuation of the end of the first Potters Bar on top.

Bar playing at Coles Park, their home away from home, used the fans behind them to their advantage as they powered on.

Luckily for the ‘Gate, we managed to weather the storm and come out unscathed at only 2-0, when it could’ve been five or six. The togetherness in this squad over the last five games is just what everyone had been crying out for and when we play as a team, we can do great things.

We move onto Saturday as we face the league champions, Hornchurch, at Hartsdown Park! TICKET OFFER: An adult will get in free with an U18 for this game!
