MATCH REPORT / Dominant Blues Beat Wingate
Dominant Blues Beat Wingate
Margate won their first game since November with a well-deserved victory against Wingate and Finchley 3-1 at Hartsdown Park on Saturday afternoon.
Margate had the first chance of the afternoon in the 14th minute when a Ben Greenhalgh free kick found the head of Sam Blackman but it sailed over the bar. Blackman made amends for the miss when he met Greenhalgh’s corner three minutes later heading in a fine goal to give the Blues a 17th minute lead.
Margate looked to build upon their quick start as they continued to move the ball nicely from midfield to attack where Phil Roberts again looked lively in a Blues shirt. It was soon to be 2-0 to the hosts as Ade Cole struck a long range effort to double the Blues lead after Nathan Wood saw his shot rebound of the post, Roberts followed up and saw his shot blocked well, but the ball came back to Cole who struck it well with the inside of his foot from 25 yards, seeing it go over the head of the visitor’s keeper.
Margate saw both Cole and Blackman go off with injuries so a rejig had to be done but with Harry Hudson superbly marshalling his defence the Gate were able to go in at halftime with the two goal lead.
On the hour Greenhalgh had a free kick on the edge of the area and with some of the crowd thinking it went in he was unlucky to hit the side netting. Hudson and his defence were still keeping strong but were breached after 71 minutes when a ball was whipped in and Darnell Wynter headed in at the back post.
Despite the threat of a Wingate fightback, Roberts made sure of the points when he fooled the visitors defence, going one way then another, making a nice angle for himself to strike a shot into the left corner to seal the 3-1 win.
Margate return to action on Wednesday evening as they face Kingstonian at the home of Tooting & Mitcham.
