Roberts: "Squad Depth Is Important"

A late goal from Bobby Unwin was enough to halt a valiant comeback from Margate as they saw their first loss at Hartsdown Park this season in a 2-1 defeat on Friday night.
Goalscorer Phil Roberts spoke after the game: “Congrats to Cheshunt, they moved the ball really well, the shape they played allowed them really good movement. First-half we were happy, we had a game plan, second-half when they scored it was against the flow of the game so took us a while to get back into it.”
Despite a late loss, there are plenty of positives as new singings once again impressed for the ‘Gate.
New singing Atonis Vasilious in particular, who came on late in the second-half, impressed Roberts.
“The squad depth is really good, everyone’s really shown a good account of themselves. Vas did unbelievably well and I think he can go from strength to strength.”
“I thought when Vas came on he completely changed the game so well done to him.”
Sadly, Montel Agyemang suffered an injury during the match and the club have since confirmed he has a broken Tibia bone and will require surgery.
“He’s way more than just a number four or a midfielder”, said Roberts.
“He’s really good vibes around the changing room and I wish him a speedy recovery.”
Margate have little time to dwell on a defeat as they face Folkestone in a Kent Derby on Monday, and for Roberts it couldn’t come at a better time.
“I’m really looking forward to it. Nothing I like more than having a game right round the corner after a loss. We know the things we do well and need to tighten up on.”
Phil Roberts is sponsored by Alan Swinnock (Home & Away) for the 2023/24 season.
