MATCH PREVIEW / Development Side Lose League Opener
Development Side Lose League Opener
In a frenetic encounter John Brown had an early effort that whistled over the bar, whilst at the other end a series of corners, free kicks and crosses meant the gate defence had to deal with an aerial bombardment into their box.
Faversham went ahead from a long throw which found its way to the edge of the box, somehow evading several weak challenges, before it was tucked away in the bottom corner.
Margate didn't win enough challenges, 1st or 2nd balls in the first half as we got physically dominated.
A change of system in the second period lead to an improved Margate performance and they missed three glorious chances, the first from Sid Warden who fired narrowly wide after good build up play, the second from Olly Baker who somehow shot over from eight yards out and the third from Ben Fitchett who shot wide after a knock down in the box.
However, Faversham always carried a threat and after a corner was unnecessarily given away, a header cannoned off the Margate crossbar and with a Faversham player the quickest to react to the rebound, the ball was bundled into the net.
A disappointing result, but some very encouraging signs for this young Margate side with seven of the squad of 16 still U18's and on this evidence it looks like both teams will have encouraging campaigns.
