Sandmann Assesses Haringey Game

Margate Joint Manager Mike Sandmann was left to rue a missed opportunity to take more from The Gate’s encounter against 10-man league leaders Haringey Borough on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking after the 1-0 loss, Sandmann said:

“It is disappointing to concede late on in the match and in the manner we did. We have a good defensive record in the league so to give away a goal from a set piece was frustrating.”

“Ultimately, we didn’t do enough in the final third and create enough chances despite having some good spells of possession and the man advantage.”

Whilst going away empty-handed, Sandmann praised the opposition side.

“Haringey are a very good side and we saw today, they are top of the league for a reason. I believe they are the best forward line we have come up against so it’s a shame we couldn’t hold onto the clean sheet and bring back a more positive result.”

The Margate squad welcomed some new faces ahead of Saturday’s game and alongside the news of Dave Martin’s extended loan stay, Sandmann hopes the signings can prove to make an impact.

“We felt that Bradley and Joseph looked positive. They’ve only met the squad today, so as time goes on, they get to train and know the group the better they will grow into the team.”

Margate face their second game in seven days with a re-scheduled trip to Lewes on Wednesday evening. The squad will dust themselves off and go again as Sandmann anticipates an equally challenging game to Saturday.

“Wednesday is another tough game. We know this month as a whole is going to be tough playing the top teams in the league, but we must bounce back and put on a positive performance.”

Sandmann added,

“There is no point feeling sorry for ourselves, we are in the position we are and only we can get ourselves out of it. We haven’t been good enough too many times this season and it has put us in a difficult position.”

“But there are still plenty of games to play and there is no doubt about it, we will continue to work as hard as we can to start getting results that pushes up the right direction of the league.”
