Margate U23's started their SCEFL Development campaign with an impressive 2-0 away win at Herne Bay U23’s on Monday evening.

The ‘Gate settled into the game well, but despite some good passing plays they were unable to convert this possession into any clear positive scoring opportunities. Charlie Meade nearly scored, but the attempt was deflected wide during a counterattack by Margate.

Margate did manage to hit the woodwork from a Gabriel Duo shot with the rebound being cleared to safety.

Herne Bay had limited opportunities in the first half, with a close attempt from a cross that found their striker's head being their best chance.

Duo played a key role in the midfield, breaking up play and making strong runs. In the 35th minute, Lliam Wilson was substituted for Kodie Bristow, whose energy disrupted Herne Bay's defence and Just before half-time, David Woodgate's pass to Meade, however his shot went over.

Herne Bay also hit the post in this very tight first half but as with Margate’s effort were also unable to capitalise on the rebound.

The second half continued the same as the first with chances limited for both teams.

Lamin Saidy replaced Ben Bin-Luboya and it was Saidy’s early shot that was blocked by a Herne Bay defender.

Eventually, the breakthrough came from a corner from a handball resulting in a penalty to the visitors, which Woodgate converted on the rebound. With control of the game, the young Blues confidently moved the ball and increased their lead in the 78th minute, when Danny Martin capitalized on a goalkeeping error to make it 2-0.

Herne Bay had a late chance but missed the target.

This team spirt was driven on by Margate’s man of the match Duo inspiring and sealing a well-deserved victory.

Overall this was a very tight game between two evenly matched teams with Margate taking their chances after increasing the second half tempo and moving the ball quicker in the right areas of the pitch.

The next game for our Development squad is away to Larkfield & New Hythe U23 Thursday 31st August 2023 with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm.
