U23's Suffer Narrow Defeat At Faversham
By Paul Meade
The U23's fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away at the Aquatherm Stadium against Faversham Town, dropping the 'Gate down to 3rd place in the table.
In a game dominated by defences, it was Faversham that started the brightest, but as the game developed so did The 'Gate's confidence with both Margate's centre backs and fullbacks, Lee and Chidu, containing some lively wing play from the hosts.
The 'Gate would finish the first half the stronger of the two teams and would go into the dressing room full of confidence to go and get the opener in the second half. Margate started the second half with a much higher intensity and dominated the first 30 mins with Loui Hoxha hitting the post and Raju Ahmed just failing to find the target from a fine right wing cross from Tyler Lee.
The deadlock was final broken with a quick counter attack from Faversham that wasn’t dealt with, this time, by the 'Gate's defence and the resulting fierce low drive by Town's striker gave Alfie Longford no chance in net. Margate came back strongly in search of the equaliser but struggled to create any clear cut chances.
Overall this was a good game between two top sides and a learning curve for Margate. We would like to thank Faversham for their excellent hospitality before and after the game.
