U23's Back Into Top Three

U23

Report by David Hansen

A rainy Friday evening saw our young Margate u23’s get three points at Hartsdown Park under the lights against Bearsted in the SCEFL Development League as they ran out 2-1 winners.

Margate were looking to bounce back after a defeat at Southwood against rivals Ramsgate, as the Rams ran out a 4-1 win in the derby after a hat-trick from Wes Hennessey helped them to the three points.

Bearsted started the better of the two teams and managed to get an early goal after a cross fell kindly to the edge of the box before a powerful low strike beat the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Daniel Kennedy to make it 1-0 inside 10 minutes.

Following the goal Bearsted didn’t really take control of the game which allowed Margate to equalise only nine minutes later after skipper David Woodgate shot was deflected into the Bearsted top corner to level the game in the 19th minute.

Most of the remaining chances in the 1st half fell to the ‘Gate but none of which were converted. Including a great chance for Liam Wilson, but he couldn’t direct Nathan Geddes’ cross into the net.

Just before the break Loui Hoxha had his best chance of the half as he decided to shoot from range, but the keeper was able to palm the ball behind for the corner. Following this chance, the half time whistle sounded, and Margate were unable to take the lead after some great opportunities to do so.

After the interval Margate instantly took the lead after a brilliant run down the left from Raju Ahmed and cross which Tyler Lee was able to poke home to give Margate the lead only three minutes after the restart.

Following the goal, the rest of the game was littered with injuries and neither team was able to create any real chances. Ultimately this led to Margate getting the three points at Home after Bearsted were not able to test the Margate goal.

This win put Margate u23’s up into 3rd place in the league just behind Faversham Town and League leaders Chatham Town.

The ‘Gate will be back in SCEFL Development League action on Friday 27th October as they take on Chatham Town at Hartsdown Park under the lights.
