U23's Top SCEFL Development League After Win

U23

By David Hansen

Margate U23's maintained their perfect start to the SCEFL Development league as they beat an also perfect Faversham U23’s at Hartsdown Park under the lights to put themselves at the summit of the table.

On a humid evening at Hartsdown Park, it was the visitors who made the better start as they were able to put pressure on Kennedy’s goal as a free kick just went over the bar and a shot from close range which found the side netting after only five minutes.

Margate managed to stem the flow of chances of Faversham as it was them who had some chances including a shot from range by Reece Greig which tested the Faversham keeper. Faversham were getting frustrated by the ‘Gate pressure as they received some cheap yellow cards early.

Faversham managed to take the lead just before half time as a corner which was whipped towards the back post was nodded down into the 6-yard box and with Margate unable to deal with the ball, the Faversham player stuck a foot out and the ball was scuffed over the line to give them the upper hand heading into the break.

It would be the ‘Gate who started the 2nd half on the front foot as a fantastic chance fell to u18 Hatrick hero Ned Odlin who's shot was well saved to keep the score at 1-0.

The game would make a significant turn as a red card was brandished to the Faversham keeper as he made no attempt to play the ball to deny a ‘Gate equaliser. With the keeper off for an early shower, Faversham had to play an outfield player in net!

Margate would equalise from the spot with an emphatic finish coming from substitute Danny Martin to give the ‘Gate momentum heading into the final 20 minutes.

The extra player had a real impact as Margate began to dominate possession and create several chances one of which fell to Vincent Bowman who managed to latch onto a through ball and drill his shot low into the net to give the ‘Gate the lead.

After lengthy stoppage time the final whistle was blown, which certified that Margate would top the SCEFL Development league and maintain that perfect record to start the season.
