Glebe (A) - 5th May 2024

By David Hansen

The penultimate game of the season sees Margate FC Women travel to Chislehurst to take on Glebe Ladies, at the Old Elthanmians’ War Memorial Recreation Ground!

Although a 2nd place finish relies on others results a win this weekend will secure a top three finish for the side!

The two sides met only three weeks ago, at Hartsdown Park in the SECWFL Premier Division. It was Margate who ran out 3-0 winners, in a comfortable afternoon’s work. Second half goals from Paige Godden, Abbie Luby and Emily Hall were enough to grab the three points.

Glebe have suffered back-to-back home defeats since our last meeting. Starting with a 1-0 loss to Bromleians, and last week a 2-0 loss to London Road. This has confirmed Glebe’s relegation from the Premier Division at the end of the season.

Following on from the loss in the SECWFL Cup Final against Tonbridge Angels, Margate earned a deserved point against league champions, XL Academy, at the Star Meadow Sports Club. Coming back from 2-0 down, a brilliant freekick from Abbie Luby brought them back into the game, before a high press forced a defensive error and XL put the ball in the back of their own net.

The point last week means a chance of 2nd remains alive this season, but this will rely on a victory against Glebe and Tunbridge Wells Foresters dropping points when they face Bromleians. We could see a repeat of last season where the final game of the season determines league positions.

Steph Meek has had her say regarding the upcoming game:

“This week we are back on the road with just two fixtures remaining. A win will see us secure a top three finish at the end of the season. Second relies on the results of others but we go into the match looking to claim three points and put our best foot forward so we can capitalise on any shortfall by Tunbridge wells foresters in the next few weeks.

“We are lacking in players this weekend due to the bank holiday and in some respects, this concerns me. On the flip side, however, it has provided a huge opportunity for some of the development side so step up into the squad. 3 of these players will make their debut for the team as we take on Glebe.

“For those supporters who have been with us longer than my managing days, you’ll catch a rare glimpse of me too lacing up my boots in a bid to support the team.

“Although numbers may look concerning, and we are desperately pushing through to the end of the season, we are still in a very strong position and there’s no cause for concern. A huge number of unforeseen long-term injuries have left us depleted but the summer break will allow my team and I to regroup and recruit to bounce back stronger next season.”

Players to watch:

Under the circumstances for Margate our players to watch are all the Margate development players on show, such as: Emily McCormack, Annabelle Ashby, Robyn Nicklin, Halle Harrington and Katie Andrews. The Margate development side have given themselves a chance of winning the league this season after getting 40 points from 16 games, whilst scoring 92 goals along the way. Nothing short of inspiring in the teams’ first season of senior football.

A special mention to manager Steph Meek who will be lacing up her boots, to help with numbers on Sunday and support her side on the pitch as well as the touchline.

Kick-off for the game is Sunday 5th May at 2:00pm, at the Old Elthanmians’ War Memorial Recreation Ground in Chislehurst.
