Women Exit The FA Cup On Penalties
By Steph Meek
In an intense FA Cup clash that saw Margate FC Women bravely take on higher-tier Herne Bay FC Women, the game ended 2-2 after regular time before Margate narrowly lost 5-4 on sudden death penalties. Despite the defeat, Margate's spirited performance left everyone at the club immensely proud.
The match began with Herne Bay FC capitalising on an unfortunate defensive error from Margate, which allowed them to take an early lead.
However, Margate showed resilience and determination, fighting back to level the score just before half-time. The equaliser came from a brilliant piece of link-up play, culminating in a composed finish by debutant Beth Miller.
Youth graduate, Miller demonstrated her potential by expertly firing the ball over the Herne Bay ‘keeper, who could only get a slight touch, unable to prevent it from finding the back of the net.
The second half saw Margate continue their momentum. They took the lead through a moment of sheer brilliance from Emily Hall, who latched onto a precise through ball from Paige Godden.
Hall, with impeccable timing, struck the ball on the half volley, lobbing the goalkeeper and putting Margate ahead 2-1.
Herne Bay, undeterred, managed to equalise late in the second half, setting the stage for a tense finish to the game. The match remained fiercely competitive, with both sides pushing for a winner. As the final whistle blew, the scores were still tied, and the game went to penalties.
After a series of well-taken penalties, it reached sudden death. Unfortunately for Margate, Herne Bay edged out a 5-4 victory after Margate’s final penalty was saved by Edie Kelly.
Margate's lineup featured a remarkable four debuts, with three 16-year-olds and an under-18 player being called up and starting the match. The inclusion of three youth graduates showcased the club's commitment to nurturing young talent and provided a glimpse into a promising future.
Despite the result, Margate FC Women can hold their heads high. The team's structured play and competitive spirit were evident throughout the match, proving they could stand toe-to-toe with a higher-tier opponent.
Steph Meek had her say on the game:
“I won't hesitate to say that I went into this match a bundle of nerves. I put high level of pressure on the fixture after last year’s success and couldn't help but dwell on the fact we hadn't been so lucky with this year's draw.
“I should have taken a step back and given myself the time to realise that we were more than capable of stepping up to such a big occasion. We've worked incredibly hard and developed a strong squad who are looking more composed, more capable and most importantly more united than ever.
“I trust in every one of them to deliver on what's being asked and they did just that. They showed their strength and their ability supporting one another throughout the fixture, on and off the pitch.
“To come back from behind, then to take the lead and hold that lead for a considerable length is no mean feat but when you consider the league difference between the sides it becomes even more incredible.
“I'd like to give special mention to Suzie Urban and Beth Miller who have stepped into the first team from our youth set up, both proving themselves worthy of their starting XI feature.
“I am so proud of the performance this team displayed. Of course, we're disappointed with the result but we won't let it dampen us and we head into the season ready to focus on the other 4 competitions we’re set to feature in. ‘
“The club and fans alike are incredibly proud of the team's performance. They not only held their own against a strong Herne Bay side, but also demonstrated the depth of talent within the squad. This match will undoubtedly be a valuable experience for Margate's young players as they continue to develop and grow in their football careers.”
