Ben Thornby

Ben joined the academy from grammar school after completing his GCSEs, in which he achieved outstanding results - grades 5-7 (A’s and B’s) in all but one subject! Ben had the easy option, and natural choice, to stay at his grammar school which was much closer to home and continue his sixth form studies there. It was not an easy choice to move school; however, Ben knows exactly why he choose the academy…

“The academy was a chance for me to leave my comfort zone and learn something completely new. Also being a very passionate player, I wanted to progress as a footballer while enjoying a new and very interesting syllabus. The sixth form at Herne Bay is one of the best in the area, so I’m confident it will open many doors for me”.

Dre Barnard

Dre came up through our youth section so had been involved in the club for many years prior to joining the academy. As soon as Dre heard about the academy it sparked interested! He very quickly decided it was the right pathway him. Dre achieved mainly grade 4’s (C’s) in his GCSEs allowing him to study at level 3 and give him the option of University in the future. Dre on his decision to join our post 16 academy…

“The reason I joined the academy was because I have a great passion for football and have been told by many former players that the academy is strong on the football and academic side of things. It is also a great place for me to progress as a player and develop myself to play at the highest level possible. I’m interested in scholarship opportunities in America, I feel that the Margate Academy will help me reach this goal.”

Sam Anderson

Sam joined the academy at Herne Bay High School to study Media, Business and Sport. Students can join the academy and selected from a wide choice of A levels and BTEC programmes, which appealed to Sam. Having achieved mainly grade 5 and 6 in his GCSE’s, Sam had many options when selecting where to continue his sixth studies, but for Sam there was a standout choice…

"As a player for Margate FC, it has been a challenge I set myself to be a part of the academy football team. However, I am passionate about my education and wanted to progress with my A Levels as well. Herne Bay High gave me to opportunity to do both. Playing for the academy will help me progress further and become a better player and I am also able to study the courses I will need for my future.”
