'Gate Defeated By 10 Man Aveley

Margate put in a dismal first half performance at Parkside on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten by 10 man Aveley in the Isthmian Premier Division.

Lewis Knight partnered Harry Hudson at centre-half, whilst Peter Ojemen started left-back in place of the injured Taylor Fisher, whilst the Blues went for a front three of Ben Greenhalgh, Korrey Henry and Eddie Dsane.

Horrific travel chaos from Kent meant the ‘Gate had a battle on their hands even before kick-off, and that was added to in the 9th minute as Kenny Aileru put the hosts ahead.

The ‘Gate started poorly, but were handed a lifeline as Blaise Riley-Snow was shown a second yellow card in quick succession as the hosts were reduced the ten men with less than 20 minutes on the clock.

The sending off only appeared to lift the spirits of the hosts as they broke away in the 23rd minute leading to George Sykes doubling their lead and adding to the ‘Gate’s miserable afternoon.

A couple of free-kicks from Greenhalgh was as exciting as it got for the travelling Blues fans, whose misery was compounded in the 35th minute as Brendon Shabani made it 3-0.

The ‘Gate restored some hope in the dying seconds of the first half as Cameron Brodie snatched his fourth goal since joining on loan from Dartford, and the visitors went in two goals down, but still a man advantage and 45 minutes to play.

The second half started with Margate showing more attacking intent, however there was no real early chances that could have given the Blues a bit more belief going into the final 30 minutes.

Dsane showed some quick feet and trickery down the left before cutting inside but seeing his weak effort saved as the time continued to ebb away.

The introduction of James Bessey-Saldanha offered the Blues a bit more fresh pace up top, however the ‘Gate were unable to create any clear cut chances as they headed to their second defeat in a row in the league.

The Blues return to action on Tuesday evening as they welcome Haringey Borough to Hartsdown Park with kick-off scheduled for 7:45pm.
